"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The sender also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. Several celebrated fans have openly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a close gang. Their videos frequently depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to make music."

Grammy Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics track departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed toughness required a new sound – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global following.

However the sister act will always be their number one commitment.

"We have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
