A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
